Nyborg Municipality has been a pioneering area for sustainable construction in Denmark with the realisation of the MiniCo2 case study houses. To follow up on the circular theme the municipality’s Sustainability Council decided to develop a green building codex to be used in all public construction projects.
The challenge was to define action and steps that were both environmentally and economically sustainable to implement and that could be done juridically sound when carrying out public procurements.
Another issue was to ensure procedures and juridical criteria that would still enable local companies to compete for the public building procurements in the Nyborg region.
Together with the natural building engineers at Glarbo & White we carried out a market analysis and wrote a report on trends and scenarios for the future of sustainable construction in Denmark. The research work was followed by a series of dynamic workshops and meetings with the building department at Nyborg Municipality and selected building companies in the region.
As part of the work research and dialogue was established with other municipalities in Denmark that have previously implemented green building criteria for public construction processes to learn from their experiences.
The development process also included two citizen meetings with workshops about the plans.
The work resulted in a green building codex that was unanimously accepted and put into action by the city council in Nyborg.
Key to the codex was a carefull focus on defining and selecting building materials that have a minimum of chemical and harmfull substances as well as a low amount of embodied CO2 and energy usage.
To promote the use of design principles for circular construction the codex included principles about reuse of building waste and design for disassembly. Another key area is the use of life cycle analysis to
